What can I do with my 24 hours in Austin, TX?

Staying at Austin Motel on South Congress. Have from 3pm this afternoon to about 3 tomorrow. Things I am interested in: Walking around UT, Texas museum, Zilker Park, eating some good Texas vittles, bats, maybe live music tonight. Any suggestions on which of these I should choose? I will not have a car so walking distance will be important. Is walking around UT worth it, or would it be better to walk farther to the park? Thanks!

  1. Walking around UT is not worth it unless you are a UT fan! (I am not.) I would walk around South Congress, go to the shops, eat from the trailers (they're surprisingly good), go hear some live music at Continental Club. You could walk to Zilker Park, but a lot of it is currently closed. The Texas History Museum is ok if you're interested in TX history and it's somewhat close to UT so if you really wanted to see UT, you could. I've lived in Austin my whole life and still have not seen the bats on Congress, but I hear it's worthwhile. Also, you might like walking around the capitol.
  2. South Congress has great shops and places to eat. Zilker is closed but you can check out Barton Springs and go for a dip in the pool. The UT campus is great and you can check out the football stadium, which seats close to 90,000 people on game days and take a tour of the trophy rooms. (A must for any college football buff.) You are staying at a good and central location so you are close to everything. A cab from your place to UT would only be about $5. Or you can catch the Capital Metro bus for a buck, which runs all day between downtown and UT. The website can give you a route, just enter your addresses for destinations. The Bat Bridge is walking distance from your hotel. Stay in the area that is close to the Austin American Statesman parking lot. Take a towel or blanket. Anyone who calls themself an Austinite has at least see the bat bridge and is a UT fan so take in that experience! The museum has lots to see and will eat up a lot of your time. It's focused much on Texas history, obviously. Live music and good food can be done at Stubb's BBQ on Red River. That will help you get two things done.
